Cidade Velha | Cape Verde

Postcard
The town of Ribeira Grande, renamed Cidade Velha in the late 18th century, was the first European colonial outpost in the tropics. Located in the south of the island of Santiago, the town features some of the original street layout impressive remains including two churches, a royal fortress and Pillory Square with its ornate 16th century marble pillar.

This postcard doesn’t show much of the old town, only a part of the beach/coastline. But as you can read on the back, it is definitely a part of Cidade Velha.

The map of Cape Verde

Postcard
Cape Verde is an island country, spanning an archipelago of 10 islands located in the central Atlantic Ocean. More than 500 kilometres (350 miles) off the coast of Western Africa (near Senegal and The Gambia).

Cape Verde consists of two groups of islands:
-         - the Barlavento Islands (windward islands) : Santo Antão, São Vicente, Santa Luzia, São Nicolau, Sal, Boa Vista; and
-         - the Sotavento Islands (leeward): Maio, Santiago, Fogo, Brava.

The islands are of volcanic origin and while three of them (Sal, Boa Vista and Maio) are fairly flat, sandy and dry, the remaining ones are generally rockier and have more vegetation.

Stamp
In 2012 Cape Verde issued four stamps about antique objects; a Cape Verde wash basin.

This postcard travelled over a year to reach its destination. Well, Cape Verde is far away, but….. there is another reason. Our local mailman decided not to deliver all of the mail, but save some in his garage. He was caught recently and about a week ago I found appr. 60 postcards in my mailbox. My missing postcards since 2011!

A postcard from Cape Verde

Postcard

“At the cross-road of the three continents that border the Atlantic, there is an obligatory stop in the middle of the ocean, the Archipelago of Cabo Verde.”

Cape Verde is an island country, spanning an archipelago of 10 islands located in the central Atlantic Ocean, 570 kilometres off the coast of Western Africa. The islands are of volcanic origin. Its six inhabited islands, located more to the West, are characterized by their mountainous landscapes, whereas the remaining three are distinguished by their long sandy beaches.

Stamp
From a set of 4 stamps about great navigators (2006): Francis Drake
