The church of peace in Jawor | Poland

The religious and political conflicts of the 17th century that took place in the German states ended with the so called Peace of Westphalia in 1648. Silesian Protestants, supported by Sweden, negotiated the right to establish three new churches.

The Austrian emperor, Ferdinand, allowed to build churches in Glogau (Głogów), Schweidnitz (Świdnica) and Jauer (Jawor). Two of the three churches are still standing today, only the Protestant church in Glogow had burned down in 1758.

The Churches of Peace in Jawor and Świdnica are the largest timber-framed religious buildings in Europe. Both churches are on the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites.

The ruins of the castle, located on a hill, date back to the 14th century. It is part of the Trail of the Eagles' Nests, a system of fortifications to protect western Lesser Poland from the Czechs.

Olsztyn is a city on the Łyna River in northeastern Poland. The card pictures the City hall, built in 1912-1916. The city was a member of the Hanseatic league.

 

In the mid-thirteenth century, North German seafaring merchants joined together to form the Hanseatic League as a way to pursue their shared economic interests. Throughout the North Sea and Baltic Sea region, up to 200 towns and cities were members of the League, as were several large trading houses. 

For over 400 years, the Hanseatic League played a major role in shaping economies, trade and politics before losing its significance in the mid-seventeenth century.

Historic Frombork | Poland

Frombork is a town in northern Poland, locally known as “The Jewel of Warmia” (a historical region). The astronomer and mathematician Nicolaus Copernicus (1473 – 1543) died in Frombork and was buried in the cathedral. His grave only to be discovered by archaeologists in 2005.

Copernicus was born in Toruń. Both Frombork and Toruń were members of the Hanseatic League, an alliance of trading guilds that established and maintained a trade monopoly along the coast of Northern Europe.

Wrocław is the fourth largest city in Poland with 650,000 inhabitants. The Old Town Hall is located at the center of the city’s Market Square. The oldest parts of the Gothic building dates back to as early as the 14th century. 

In that period trade is booming which resulted at the end of the 13th century in a membership of the Hanseatic League, a powerful association of German and North European cities. Wroclaw left the league in 1474.

A Fairy Tale Castle from Poland: Moszna Zamek

Moszna Castle, Now a Centre of Therapy of Neurosises and hotel,  is situated in Poland , about 30 km southeast of the city Opole. The palace and park complex is the former residence of the German Tiele-Winckler family. This gigantic 7,000 square and 65,000 cubic meter construction was started in the 17th century and has 365 rooms and 99 turrets.
