Joya de Cerén was a pre-Hispanic farming community that, like Pompeii and Herculaneum in Italy, was buried under an eruption of the Laguna Caldera volcano c. AD 600.

Because of the exceptional condition of the remains, they provide an insight into the daily lives of the Central American populations who worked the land at that time.

Coatepeque Caldera, El Salvador

Santa Ana, El Salvador's highest volcano, is a massive, 2381-m-high stratovolcano that rises immediately west of Coatepeque caldera.

A volcano caldera is a depression in the ground created by the collapse of land after a volcanic eruption. In some cases, the caldera is created slowly, when the ground sinks down after a magma chamber is emptied. In other situations, the magma explodes violently, and the caldera is the deep pit in the ground that remains after the volcano blows its top off.

San Salvador is the capital city of El Salvador, the smallest and most densely populated country in Central America.  

El Boquerón, meaning wide opening or big hole in English, is a crater on San Salvador Volcano.

In the middle you see a statue of Jesus Christ (Monumento al Divino Salvador del Mundo) standing on planet earth.

Puerto Del Diablo, better known as the Devil’s Door, comprises two striking boulders that reach for the sky. Take a peek between them and you’ll see that they serve as a window to the sights of El Salvador.

El Salvador: La Ruta de las Flores

Ruta de las Flores, or the ‘Flower Route’.

The name of this 40km stretch of western El Salvador comes from the plentiful wildflowers that grow along the road.

The route essentially covers a handful of small, attractive colonial towns along around 40km of winding, relatively quiet road. One is the town of Juayúa. On the left you see the Santa Lucia Church. On the right Juayua Waterfalls.

There is a sizable population of persons of Palestinian heritage who live in El Salvador. During the Ottoman Empire, the Christians of Bethlehem sent the young people of the community to other countries, in order to prevent them from being drafted into the army. Some of them reached El Salvador, and today there is a community there of 70,000 Palestinian Christians.
