Xiyu Western Fort | Taiwan

Xiyu or ‘Fisherman Island’ is one of the Pescadores Islands, an archipelago of 64 islands and islets in the Taiwan Strait between China and Taiwan. The island is one of the main islands and has a population of about 8,500.

The cannons are part of the Xiyu Western Fort, located on this island. The fort is one of 10, built to protect Taiwan from the harassment and attacks of pirates and bandits.

The Penghu or Pescadores Islands are an archipelago of 64 islands and islets in the Taiwan Strait between mainland China and Taiwan Island. One of these islands is Qimei.

The Twin-Heart Fish Trap is a well-preserved ancient fish trap made by stacking stones to form a trap that resembles a flying heart. This underwater dam, created to reduce, but not stop the flow of water is located on the north side of Qimei Island.

Fort Provintia in Tainan City, Taiwan

Chihkan Tower, formerly known as Fort Provintia, in Tainan City was built in 1653 by the Dutch during their colonization of Taiwan.

During the period of Dutch colonization from 1624 to 1662, Taiwan was known as Formosa. The Dutch East India Company established its presence on Taiwan/Formosa to trade with China and Japan.

It has five theme parks: the European Gardens, the Aladdin Plaza, the Aboriginal Villages, Amusement Isle and Ti Ka Er Rainforest. Amusement facilities in these five theme parks include joy ride, cultural square, artistic fountain, museums, 3-D theater, aboriginal dance show, etc.

Vase Rock, Little Liouciou Island | 小琉球, Taiwan

Little Liouciou lies off the southwestern coast of Taiwan, and is the only one of Taiwan's 14 offshore islands or island groups that is composed of coral. Vase Rock (or Flower Vase Rock) is the symbol of Little Liouciou, and the sight that most tourists come to see. It’s a pretty peculiar looking rock. Maybe shaped more like a mushroom than a vase though. Vase Rock is the result of coral sculpted by wave action.

Pingtung is home to Kenting National Park, Taiwan’s first National Park. Longpan Scenic Area is located on the Hengchun Peninsula in Pingtung County. Situated on the east coast of Kenting National Park, Longpan Park is a scenic location like no ordinary park, with incredibly wide vistas and views of the Pacific Ocean set alongside some breathtakingly steep cliffs.

POSTCARD:
BuiIt in 1653, Fort Provintia, popularly known as the Red-Haired tower, is located on the shore across the Tai-Chiang inland sea from Fort Zeelandia.  It is another important fort built by the Dutch during their occupation in Taiwan.  The fort was built in response to an uprising in the year before. 

STAMPS:
The yellow flowers
Gentiana scabrida var. punctulata (NT$5): The plant can be found in open meadows and gravelly slopes in high elevation areas of the Central Mountain Range. Each branch typically produces one or two (and occasionally three) terminal flowers. The blooms have yellow campanula calyx and corolla, with black spots at the base of the petals. Though small, when a colony of these colorful exquisite flowers is in full bloom, the sight is simply breathtaking.

The pink coloured flowers
Euphrasia transmorrisonensis (NT$5): The plant can be found at high elevations. Its Chinese name literally means “millet grass,” either because its small seeds resemble millet or the two yellow marks on the flower’s lip resemble millet. Its flowers are arranged in racemes, with very short pedicels. Each of its tiny delicate white flowers has four tubular or campanula sepals and a smidgen of yellow on its corolla.

The blue-ish bird
The Bronzed Drongo (Dicrurus aeneus) is a small Indomalayan bird belonging to the drongo group. They are resident in the forests of South Asia and Southeast Asia. They are very similar to the other drongos of the region but are somewhat smaller and compact with differences in the fork depth and the patterns of gloss on their feathers.

The Greater Painted Snipe, Rostratula benghalensis, is a species of wader in the family Rostratulidae. It is found in marshes in Africa, India, Pakistan, and South-east Asia
