Roatán Island | Honduras

Roatán is an island off the northern coast of Honduras. It is located between the islands of Útila and Guanaja, and is the largest of the Bay Islands. The island is about 50km long and only 2 to 4 km wide. Roatan is a real diving and snorkeling mecca.

The stamp shows the ‘Fortaleza de San Fernando de Omoa’. A fortress built between 1759 and 1777 by the Spanish conquistadores to protect the coast from rampant piracy.

San Miguel Cathedral - Tegucigalpa - Honduras

The capital of Honduras is Tegucigalpa, Honduras' largest and most populous city. The city was founded by Spanish settlers in 1578.

Tegucigalpa's cathedral, built around 1782, is located in the old historial center of  town and is named after and dedicated to Archangel Michael.

La catedral de Santa Rosa de Copan, Honduras

Santa Rosa de Copan is located in the heart of mountainous western Honduras, near the border with Guatemala.

The history of Santa Rosa de Copan begins in 1765, when the Spanish colonial authorities established the "Real Factorma de Tabaco" (royal tobacco trading post) at what is now Santa Rosa.

Downtown Santa Rosa de Copan features cobblestone streets, restored clay-roofed Spanish-style buildings, and a charming colonial church.

The Ruins of Copan, Honduras

Copan is an archaeological site of the Maya civilization located in the Copán Department of western Honduras, not far from the border with Guatemala.

Copan - known as Xukpi to the Maya - was the dominant Mayan city in the south of their territory. Its rich stone sculptures and intricate hieroglyphs make Copan a feature attraction along 'La Ruta Maya'.

Tela, a postcard from the Honduras Carribbean coast

Tela is a popular destination for Hondurans on holidays.

Tela was founded by the conquistador Cristobal de Olid the third of May 1524. Because of the date, which the Catholic Religion dedicates as the day of the Holy Cross, the city was given the name of Triunfo de la Cruz (Triumph of the Cross). As it was a rather long name, it was soon abbreviated as T. de la +, and by 1829 it was referred to as Tela.

There are historians who say that the origin of the name is a contraction of Tetela, which in the Nahua language means "land of hills and craggy mountains."
