One of the smallest primates: Philippine Tarsier

Tarsiers are primates (a group including lemurs, monkeys, apes and humans) found only in the islands of Southeast Asia. 

The Philippine Tarsier can be found in the southeastern part of the archipelago, particularly on the islands of Bohol. It measures only about 85 to 160 mm (3.35 to 6.30 inches) in height, making it one of the smallest primates.

The church of Santo Tomàs de Villanueva in Miag-ao is among the best examples in the Philippines of the “fortress baroque” style.

Built of local yellow-orange sandstone, the large fortress-church was completed in 1797. The church withstood typhoons and earthquakes, but it burned twice: first was during the revolution against Spain in 1898 and the second was during the Philippine-American War a few years later.

A hidden paradise from Philippines: Lahos Island

Lahos Island is found in Caramoan Peninsula, Camarines Sur, which is dubbed as the Philippine's hidden paradise. The island is distinctively beautiful because it has two beaches. The shore is hugged by superb white sand and amazing karst limestone formations.

The name of the island was derived from the word “Lahos” or “Laho” which means “vanish in English because the beach usually disappears during high tide.

Each region in the Philippines features its own folk dances, originating from the precolonial era to the time of the Spanish occupation from the 1500s until the late 1800s. Most of these Filipino folk dances tell stories about historical happenings, ways of life, cultural influences and religious customs.

Bontoc comes from the word buntuk, which means mountains and refers to the people of Mountain Province. Today, many of the Bontoc cultures and traditions are rarely practiced and slowly disappearing.

The Banaue Rice Terraces from Philippines

For 2,000 years, the high rice fields of the Ifugao have followed the contours of the mountains. The fruit of knowledge handed down from one generation to the next, and the expression of sacred traditions and a delicate social balance, they have helped to create a landscape of great beauty that expresses the harmony between humankind and the environment.

The Banaue Rice Terraces refer to the cluster close to the Banaue poblacion as seen from the viewpoint. Contrary to popular belief, the Banaue Rice Terraces are not a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

They were not included in the UNESCO inscription Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras due to the presence of numerous modern structures, making it score low in the integrity criterion of UNESCO.
