Australia's longest river

The Murray River is Australia's longest river at 2,500 kilometres in length. It is the third longest navigable river in the world, after the Amazon and Nile.

Sunset over San Juan Islands | USA

The San Juan Islands are an archipelago between the North coast of Washington and Vancouver Island (Canada). At mean high tide, there are over 400 islands and rocks in the archipelago, 128 of which are named.

The Islands are an important tourist destination. Sea kayaking and orca whale-watching are two of the primary attractions.

Sunrise over Wizard Island | USA

Wizard Island was created after a violent eruption of Mount Mazama, a large stratovolcano, approximately 7,700 years ago. The top of the island rises about 230 m above the surface of the lake.

The island is part of Crater Lake National Park, a United States National Park located in southern Oregon.

Torre de Belém | Portugal

The Belém tower was built in the sixteenth century in the Tagus river to control the entrance to the city from the sea. Today the tower is Lisbon’s popular tourist attraction.
The Torre de Belém is a UNESCO World Heritage site together with the Monastery of the Hieronymites, also located in Lisbon.

A stamp to celebrate the completion in 1614 of the autobiographical memoirs of Fernão Mendes Pinto (1509-1583), a Portuguese explorer and writer. His voyages are recorded in Pilgrimage (Peregrinação in Portugese).

The Silk Road was a network of trade routes between China and the Mediterranean. China silk comprised a large proportion of the trade along this ancient road, hence the name.
 
A 5,000 km section of the network is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Plebiscito Square in Naples | Italy


Postcard
Naples, two hours south of Rome, is the largest city in southern Italy. It has some of the world's best opera houses and theatres, and is often called an open-air museum, because of its many historic statues and monuments.

The postcard pictures Piazza Plebiscito (Plebiscito square), a large public square in central Naples. A 25,000 square meter open air arena set between the city and the sea.

Cedar at Sunset | Lebanon

The cedar of Lebanon is a tall evergreen tree which has been prized for its high quality timber, oils and resins for thousands of years. The tree is the national emblem of Lebanon.

Baobab at Sunset, Tarangire National Park | Tanzania


Postcard
Tarangire National Park is the sixth largest national park in Tanzania. The park is famous for its elephant migration.
 
The baobab is found in the savannas of African and India, mostly around the equator. It can grow up to 25 meters tall and can live for several thousand(!) years.

The baobab is leafless for nine months of the year. The tree looks like it has been picked out of the ground and stuffed back in upside-down.

Seychelles - a tropical island paradise

The Republic of Seychelles comprises more than 115 islands, located between 500 and 1,600 km from the east coast of Africa, northeast of the island of Madagascar. Nearby islands include the MaldivesMauritius, and Réunion. The majority of the islands in the Seychelles archipelago are virtually untouched tropical paradises.

Sunset over Larnaca Salt Lake, Cyprus

The Larnaca Salt Lakes are located west of the city of Larnaca, near the main airport. During the winter months the lakes fills with water whilst in the summer the water evaporates, leaving a crust of salt and a haze of grey dust. During spring and autumn seasons, the Larnaca's Salt Lake is visited by many pink flamingos.
 
The Mosque of Umm Haram or Hala Sultan Tekke Mosque is located on the shores of Larnaca Salt Lake.

Sunset over Île de la Possesion, Crozet Islands

The Crozet Islands are a sub-antarctic archipelago of small islands in the southern Indian Ocean. They form one of the five administrative districts of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands (TAAF).

Île de la Possession, or Possession Island, is one of the Crozet Islands. With an area of 150 km2 it is the largest island of the group and the only inhabited one. Administratively, it is part of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands.

Île de la Possession is an important nesting site for seabirds. The Eaton's Pintail is a species of dabbling duck, restricted to the island groups of Kerguelen and Crozet.

Sunset at the island of Amrum

The North Frisian Islands are a group of islands in the Wadden Sea, a part of the North Sea, off the western coast of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. There are four larger islands and ten tiny islets. The names of the large islands are Sylt, Föhr, Amrum, and Pellworm.

Amrum has appromixately 2,300 inhabitants. Sand dunes are a characteristic part of Amrum’s landscape.

Island of the Sleeping Lady, Micronesia

Micronesia, also known as the Federated States of Micronesia, is a beautiful island nation in the north-western Pacific Ocean. It is located somewhere between Guam and Hawaii. Meaning "small islands", Micronesia is spread over 3 million miles of the Pacific and includes over 2000 islands. The population is around 90,000.

Kosrae is the second largest island in Micronesia and covers an area of only 110 km2. It is located hundreds of miles from its nearest neighboring island. The island is also known as “Island of the sleeping lady”.

Sunrise at Sazilé beach, Mayotte

Mayotte is part of the archipelago that makes up the Comoros Islands. The archipelago is located in the Mozambique Channel in the Indian Ocean, between Madagascar and Mozambique.  Mayotte is an overseas department and region of France.

Taken by Malagasy people from Madagascar at the end of the 18th century, it came under French control in 1843. Together with the other Comoros islands and Madagascar, it became part of a single French overseas territory in the early 20th century. It has been administered separately since 1975, when the three northernmost islands of the Comoros declared independence.

Peggy's Cove - Nova Scotia

Peggy’s Cove is a small rural community located on the eastern shore of St. Margaret’s Bay in Nova Scotia.

According to legend, Peggy's Cove was named after the only survivor of a schooner that ran aground and sank in 1800... a woman named Margaret. Local folk called her "Peggy" and her home came to be known as Peggy's Cove. The original lighthouse was built in 1868.

The Twelve Apostles, Victoria - Australia

The Twelve Apostles is a collection of limestone stacks off the shore of the Port Campbell National Park, by the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia.

You won't see 12 of these rock formations all at once, as they say some may be hidden from view from any of the vantage points. But, more importantly, there are no longer 12 rock formations, because a few have been eroded away by the action of wind and waves.
