The Curonian Spit | Lithuania

The Curonian Spit is a 98 km long, thin, curved sand-dunespit that separates the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea coast. Its southern portion is located in Russia and its northern within Lithuania. 

It is aUNESCO World Heritage Site shared by the two countries.

Old Town of Kaunas | Lithuania

Kaunas is the second largest city in Lithuania,  located on the banks of the Nemunas River.

Thanks to its location on the confluence of two major rivers Kaunas was important for trade since its establishment in medieval era. By this time most of the trade went by rivers as there were no roads in Lithuania and everything was surrounded by lush forests.

In 1441 Kaunas joined the Hanseatic League, a medieval league of towns of northern Germany and neighboring countries for the promotion and protection of commerce.

Kernavė Archaeological Site | Lithuania

Kernavė is a small town in the southeast of Lithuania, well known for the historical and archeological site. The site was included into UNESCO World Heritage list in 1994.

Trakai Island Castle, Lithuania

Trakai Island Castle is one of the must visit places in Lithuania. The castle is situated in Trakai, on the shores of Lake Galve, about 20 km from Lithuania's capital city Vilnius.

The construction of the stone castle started early in the 14th century. At the end of the 14th-15th century Trakai castle was a summer residence of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania.

In 2013 Lithuania issued two stamps depicting lighthouses. Built in 1796, the Klaipėda Lighthouse is one of the first lighthouses erected on the coast of the Baltic Sea.

The University of Vilnius, Lithuania

Vilnius University is one of the oldest universities in Eastern Europe. It was founded at a time when the reformation movement was active in Lithuania and Jesuit monks were invited to help fight the mood of reformation. Jesuit monks were quick to take over education. In 1569, they established a college and in 1579 the University of Vilnius was born.

The complexes of Vilnius University were formed over several centuries and, as a result, consist of the buildings built in Gothic, Baroque and Classical styles.

Mečislovas Reinys (1884 – 1953) was the Lithuanian Roman Catholic bishop, a professor at Vytautas Magnus University, a Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, and a social activist who publicly condemned racism and national hatred. Mečislovas Reinys was imprisoned by the Soviets after refusing to collaborate with the KGB and sent to Vladimir Prison, where he died in 1953.
