La Puerta del Conde (meaning The Count’s Gate) is located in Santo Domigo, capital of the Dominican Republic. The construction of this gate started in 1543 and is named for the Count of Peñalba, who led the successful defense of Santo Domingo against an invading force of 13,000 British troops in 1655.

Santo Domingo’s Colonial Zone was declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The postcard pictures Calle Arzobispo Meriño or, in English, Meriño Archbishop Street which is located in the Colonial Zone.

Santo Domingo is the capital and largest city in the Dominican Republic. After Christopher Columbus's arrival on the island in 1492, Santo Domingo became the site of the first cathedral of the Americas:Catedral Santa María La Menor.

The cathedral was constructed between 1514 and 1542, one of the architectural wonders of the Colonial City. The city's Colonial Zone, including the cathedral, was declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Hispaniola is a major island in the Caribbean, containing the two sovereign states of the Dominican Republic and Haiti. The island is located between the islands of Cuba to the west and Puerto Rico to the east, within the hurricane belt.

The Dominican Republic is the second largest Caribbean nation (after Cuba).

Christopher COLUMBUS explored and claimed the island on his first voyage in 1492; it became a springboard for Spanish conquest of the Caribbean and the American mainland.

After three centuries of Spanish rule, with French and Haitian interludes, the country became independent in 1821.
