Litani River | Lebanon

The Litani River  is an important water resource in southern Lebanon. The river rises in the fertile Beqaa Valley, west of Baalbek, and empties into the Mediterranean Sea north of Tyre. With a length of over 140 km, the Litani River is the longest river in Lebanon.

Beirut is the capital city and a major port. Tripoli is Lebanon's second largest city. Lebanon is a small country with a varied landscape consisting of beaches, mountains, valleys, forests and woodlands.

 

There are a number of World Heritage sites in Lebanon: the Phoenician cities of Byblos, Baalbek and Tyre, Qadisha Valley, known for its early Christian monasteries, and the Islamic city of Anjar built in the eighth century.

Becharre | بْشَرِّيْ‎ a city near the Qadisha Valley in North Lebanon

Becharre is a town at an altitude of about 1,500 m located in the Qadisha Valley in northern Lebanon. The valley is known as the Holy Valley because of the number of monasteries, churches and hermit caves there.

 

The scenery is really dramatic, with all the townships clinging to the sides of the steep valley and the middle east’s tallest mountain, the snowcapped Cornet El-Saouda, towering overhead.

Becharre is the birthplace of the famous poet, painter and sculptor Khalil Gibran who now has a museum in the town to honor him.

Afqa Falls , Lebanon

Afqa is located in the mountains of Lebanon, about 20 kilometres from the ancient city of Byblos.

The waterfall at Afqa is the source for the River Adonis, known today as Abraham River.

In Greek mythology, Adonis, the god of beauty and desire, was born and died at the foot of the falls in Afqa.

The Great Mosque of Tripoli was built around the year 1300. The Mansouri Mosque was named after the Mamluk sultan al-Mansur Qalawun, who conquered Tripoli from the Crusaders in 1289.

Mamlūk, also spelled Mameluke, are slave warriors of medieval Islam who overthrew their masters, defeated the Mongols and the Crusaders and established a dynasty that lasted three hundred years.

Harissa is a mountain village in Lebanon which is located 650 meters above sea level. The village is located 20 km north of Beirut, and accessible from the coastal city of Jounieh either by road or by a nine-minute journey by a gondola lift, known as the "Téléférique".

One of Lebanon’s oldest and most visited tourist attractions, the gondolas of the Téléférique aerial cableway are a trip down memory lane, from a pioneering venture in 1965 to a beautifully preserved modern-day attraction offering breathtaking views of Jounieh and the surrounding city, the Téléférique is an impressive testimony to time gone by, a meter at a time.

The name Byblos is Greek; papyrus received its early Greek name (byblos, byblinos) from its being exported to the Aegean through Byblos. Hence the English word Bible is derived from byblos as "the (papyrus) book".

Monastery of St. Antoine from the Qadisha Valley | Lebanon

The Qadisha Valley is hidden within a deep valley amidst rugged and desolate mountains.

Within the mountainous interior, ancient monasteries and churches provide a moving testament to Lebanon’s religious communities. Historically, the Qadisha Valley was virtually inaccessible to conquering armies, and therefore  it served as a refuge for the Middle East’s persecuted religious minorities, such as the Maronites.

Sites of significance include the red-roofed Monastery of St. Antoine in Koshaya, which was built into a cliff side and is surrounded by trees.

The Qadisha Valley is UNESCO World Heritage Site.

UNESCO’s 1965 annual report “Facts and Figures” reveals that Lebanese cinema attendance reached its peak in 1960 when Lebanon was rated the second in the world with each Lebanese buying an average of 22.5 tickets per annum!

Al-Chouf Cedars Nature Reserve, Lebanon

The Al-Chouf Cedars Nature Reserve is located 50 km from Beirut, covering two percent of the total area of Lebanon. It consists of three major forests, accounting for a quarter of the remaining cedar forests of Lebanon. In the reserve, 2000 year old trees can be found as well as various species of mountain birds, plants and mammals including wolves, hyenas, wild boars, gazelles, foxes and lynxes.

Souk El Khayatine | Ancient tailors' souk from Tripoli, Lebanon

The Khan Al Khayatine souk in Tripoli was built in the first half of the 14th century and renovated in 1974. It is the oldest souk of the city and has narrow winding alleys featuring tailor shops where you will find beautiful traditional clothing.

Jeita Grotto | مغارة جعيتا

The Jeita Grotto is made up of two limestone caves, upper galleries and a lower cave through which a 6230 m long river runs. The caves are situated 18 kilometres north of the Lebanese capital Beirut. It was one of the 28 finalists of the New 7 Wonders of Nature.

The Jeita Grotto is a popular recreational show cave and a major tourist attraction. It hosts approximately 280,000 visitors per year.
