Some 97% of fruit and vegetable exports were shipped to the United States, El Salvador, the UK, the Netherlands, Turkey, Italy, Japan and South Korea, according to the Central Bank of Guatemala.

The main markets for fruits were: Italy, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, where 74.3% of the products were sold.

Guatemala City, locally known as Guatemala or Guate, is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Guatemala. The most populous city in Central America with  a population over over 1 million.

The Tikal Futura is a modern shopping and business complex and hotel. The 2 towers include offices, 12 cinemas, 160 stores, 27 restaurants, parking space for 1500 cars and also the Grand Tikal Futura Hotel. 

Tikal refers to the ancient Mayan city discovered in a rainforest in Guatemala.

Santiaguito Volcano | Guatemala

Santiaguito has now been active for nearly a century. The volcano is part of a twin volcano system located near Quezaltenango, Guatemala’s second largest city.

The Santiaguito lava dome was created in the aftermath of the explosion of the Santa Maria Volcano in 1902. Since then it has been erupting with an explosion of hot ash and rocks every few hours.

In the heart of the jungle, surrounded by lush vegetation, lies one of the major sites of Mayan civilization. Located in Northern Guatemala, Tikal is one of the largest archaeological sites and urban centres of the Maya civilization.

The ‘Dance of the reindeer’ is an ancient Mayan custom, a story about how humans must learn to respect the natural world and when they don’t nature takes revenge. Once upon a time hunters killed every deer they saw in the forest. The other animals were enraged and chased the hunters far away.

Be careful not to take more from the forest than you absolutely need to otherwise bad things will happen.

Rabinal Achi festival, Guatemala

This weekend the annual Carnival started. I thought it would be an appropriate time to show this card.

The card was sent from Guatemala and pictures the Rabinal Achí play. The origin of this old Maya drama dated back almost 500 years. Since colonization of Guatemala in the sixteenth century it has been performed every year on 25 January.

Antigua Guatemala

The city of Antigua in Guatamala is known as the best-preserved Spanish colonial city in Central America. It was founded in the early 16th century, 1,500 m above sea-level, in an earthquake-prone region.

 

Volcán de Agua or the Water Volcano is a dormant volcano since the mid-16th century. Its name traces back to 1541, when water and mudslides from the volcano wiped out Guatemala's then-capital city.

Santa Cruz Barillas is a municipality in the department of Huehuetenango. It is situated at 1450m above sea level. This waterfall is located near Yulaxac, a village in the jungles of Barillas.
