Ogasawara Islands: the Galapagos of the east

Postcard
The Ogasawara Islands are oceanic islands comprised of about 30 islands of various sizes. As they are in the ocean separated from Tokyo by about one thousand kilometers, a lot of uniquely evolved, endemic plants and animals are found on the islands.

Ogasawara Islands are said to have been discovered by Sadayori Ogasawara in 1593. The first immigrants were five Europeans and 15 Hawaiians who had come to Ogasawara in 1830.
