Detaille Island is a small island just south of the Antarctic Circle and 11 miles east of Liard Island. It is home to a colony of 1,000 pairs of Adelie penguins. In 1956 a British research station was established on the island. This base was abandoned in 1959.In 2009 the world's most southerly post office re opened in Antarctica 50 years after it was abandoned.
