The first tramway in Lisbon entered service on 17 November 1873, as a horsecar line. On 30 August 1901, Lisbon's first electric tramway commenced operations. Within a year, all of the city's tramways had been converted to electric traction.

Estancia Santa Catalina, Argentina

Santa Catalina is known for his church, an example of colonial baroque in Argentina, clearly influenced by central European architecture in the same style.

In the ancient lands of the Old Calabalumba, the Society of Jesus purchased four 1500 pesos Estancia Santa Catalina, by that time, comprised some poor buildings and many heads of cattle. The largest of all Jesuit estancias, Santa Catalina was founded in 1622.

The church was built between the 11th and 14th centuries. It is the tallest church-tower of Andorra.

Sesriem gets its name from early pioneers, who wanted to get water from the canyon. They had to tie six leather thongs to the handle of their buckets, in order to draw water from pools that were inaccessible to their livestock. These thongs were called 'leer riems' in Afrikaans, 'ses' being six in the same language. The area soon became known as 'Ses Rieme' or Sesriem.

The Namib Desert is a desert in Namibia and southwest Angola that forms part of the Namib-Naukluft National Park, the largest game reserve in Africa. The name "Namib" is of Nama origin and means "vast place". Having endured arid or semi-arid conditions for at least 55 million years, it is considered to be the oldest desert in the world. In the highlands of Ecuador you can find many traditional markets where indigenous people sell handmade goods, produce and livestock.

Two of the most important markets in Ecuador and just south of Quito, the Ambato Market and the Saquisili Market.

The Saquisili Market is the largest market in the Cotopaxi province, and has existed since pre-Columbian times. The Saquisili Market is an open-air market that takes up eight different plazas where agricultural products, livestock, and handcrafted goods are sold.

The Galapagos Islands lie six hundred miles off the coast of Ecuador and belong to Ecuador. There are thirteen major islands, six smaller islands, and hundreds of tiny islets. 28,000 people live there on four islands.

The islands are geologically young and famed for their vast number of endemic species, which were studied by Charles Darwin during the voyage of the Beagle. His observations and collections contributed to the inception of Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection.

The islands were discovered in 1535 by Bishop Tomas de Berlanga of Panama. They were annexed by Ecuador in 1832. The islands were colonized throughout the 1800s, and primarily used as a penal colony by Ecuador.

More than 100,000 visit Galapagos each year.

Ecuador by Train

Sibambe train station, Central SierraPerched up in the paramo, a high-elevation Andean grassland wilderness, the newly built Sibambe station symbolizes the renascence of Ecuador’s once-formidable railway that was blasted through the mountains in the early 20th century under notoriously harsh conditions.

The train route is named La Nariz del Diablo, or the “Devil’s Nose” for the shape of a massive wall of rock that stood in the way of the tracks, requiring engineers to carve a series of vertiginous zigzags during which many workers died.

So far this is a day-tourist railway only, but the government has plans to extend it and add sleeper cars by 2013.

100^th anniversary of relics transportation of Euphrosyne of Polatsk (2010).

Euphrosyne of Polatsk (1110–1173) was the granddaughter of a prince of Polotsk, Vseslav. She refused all proposals of marriage and, without her parents' knowledge, ran away to the convent and became a nun.

Later she founded her own convent. She spent her time copying books, and the money she thus earned she distributed amongst the poor. She also built the church of The Holy Saviour. It is considered to be the most precious monument of early Belarusian architecture.
