Jamestown, capital of Saint Helena

St Helena is a small and remote island in the South Atlantic Ocean. The island measures only 50 square miles and has a population of about 4,500. The distance to the African mainland is 1,200 miles and 1,900 to the coast of South America. The island is part of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha—a territory of the United Kingdom. 

The island has a rich history. After Emperor Napoleon's defeat in June 1815 at the Battle of Waterloo, he was exiled to St Helena.

Breadfruit | Marshall Islands


Postcard
The Marshall Islands is an island country located near the equator in the Pacific Ocean. The country's population of 53,000 is spread out over 29 coral atolls, comprising moren than 1,000 individual islands and islets.
 
The islands share maritime boundaries with the Federated States of Micronesia to the west, Wake Island to the north, Kiribati to the south-east, and Nauru to the south.

The postcards shows a series of four stamps issued in 1990, Traditional Food: Breadfruit. We see harvesting, peeling and skinning, soaking and kneading dough.

Roatán Island | Honduras


Postcard
Roatán is an island off the northern coast of Honduras. It is located between the islands of Útila and Guanaja, and is the largest of the Bay Islands. The island is about 50km long and only 2 to 4 km wide. Roatan is a real diving and snorkeling mecca.

The stamp shows the ‘Fortaleza de San Fernando de Omoa’. A fortress built between 1759 and 1777 by the Spanish conquistadores to protect the coast from rampant piracy.

Niue Island!

Niue is a small island country in the South Pacific Ocean, 2,400 kilometres northeast of New Zealand.

The island is located in the middle of the triangle formed by TongaSamoa and the Cook Islands. Niue has a population of only 1,600.

Genghis Khan Rides Again | Mongolia

Just over thirty miles east of the Mongolian capital of Ulan Bator the old Emperor rides again.  Sat atop his horse, surveying his dominion. A huge 131 feet(!) statue of Genghis Khan dominates the steppes of Mongolia.

To the outside world, Genghis Khan, the fearsome Mongolian warrior who conquered half the known world in the 13th century, is remembered for his brutalities and destruction. Resulting in the death of forty million people. But to Mongolians, he is a national hero, a larger-than-life figure and the symbol of Mongolian culture.

Genghis Khan founded the Mongol Empire, which became the largest contiguous empire in history, revived the Silk Road, uniting warring tribes and was responsible for cementing the position of Mongols in the world’s map.

Comino Island | Malta

Comino is the smallest of the three inhabited island of the Maltese archipelago. Situated between Malta and Gozo, Comino is a paradise for snorkelers, divers, windsurfers and ramblers. The island is known as the The Blue Lagoon because of the blue-green sea.

Tarawa, capital of the Republic of Kiribati

Kiribati is an island nation in the central Pacific Ocean. Tarawa is the capital city. With over 50,000 inhabitants, half of the country’s population lives on the atoll of Tarawa.
 
The sad part is that Kiribati is expected to be the first country to lose all its land territory to global warming.

The stamps are part of a series of 16 stamps, issued in 2013. The theme is water transportation.

Temple of Abu Simbel | Egypt

The Abu Simbel temples are two massive rock temples at Abu Simbel, a village in Nubia, southern Egypt, near the border with Sudan.

Built more than 3,000 years ago, to honor Pharaoh Rameses II and his queen Nefertari. The site was moves completely in the early 60’s because it was threatened by the construction of the Aswan Dam.

Fagus Factory in Alfeld | Germany

The Fagus Factory is a shoe last factory in Alfeld on the Leine, Germany. The factory was built in 1911 by architect and Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius.

Alfeld was a member of the Hanseatic League. In the mid-thirteenth century, North German seafaring merchants joined together to form the Hanseatic League as a way to pursue their shared economic interests.

Interesting fact: Djerba is home to one of the few remaining Jewish communities in North Africa: the towns of Hara Sghira and Hara Kebira.

No people live on the island, but is it a popular tourist attraction, especially for day trippers from Cairns.

Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape | Czech Republic

“Between the 17th and 20th centuries, the ruling dukes of Liechtenstein transformed their domains in southern Moravia into a striking landscape. It married Baroque architecture (mainly the work of Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach) and the classical and neo-Gothic style of the castles of Lednice and Valtice with countryside fashioned according to English romantic principles of landscape architecture. At 200 km2 , it is one of the largest artificial landscapes in Europe.”
