St Helena is a small and remote island in the South Atlantic Ocean. The island measures only 50 square miles and has a population of about 4,500. The distance to the African mainland is 1,200 miles and 1,900 to the coast of South America. The island is part of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha—a territory of the United Kingdom.
The island has a rich history. After Emperor Napoleon's defeat in June 1815 at the Battle of Waterloo, he was exiled to St Helena.
