Lüneburg is a town in the German state of Lower Saxony. This city had once the monopoly as a supplier of salt within the North German region. Lüneburg's salt was needed in order to pickle the herring caught in the Baltic Sea and the waters around Norway.
Lüneburg was one of the members of the Hanseatic League, an alliance of trading guilds that established and maintained a trade monopoly along the coast of Northern Europe.
